In a recent article, "The Heartburn Effect: What We Know and How to Take It in the U. S. and World," published by the Cleveland Clinic, an international organization dedicated to caring for the health of Canadians, researchers analyzed data on the effectiveness of several medications used to treat GERD, including the prescription drug Nexium and its generic name esomeprazole.
Nexium, which is known by the brand name Prilosec, is one of the most widely used medications in the United States, with over 4,000 prescriptions being written for the drug since it first came onto the market. Nexium, manufactured by Eli Lilly, is known by various brand names, including Esomeprazole, which is a prescription-only drug and also is sometimes referred to as Prilosec.
The researchers studied patients with heartburn, a common condition that occurs when the heartburn begins, over a period of several days. They found that patients taking Nexium had an increased risk of serious heartburn. This increased risk was also found in patients who were prescribed an acid-suppressant, such as omeprazole, an anti-ulcer drug that prevents the acid from turning into the active acid in the stomach.
Additionally, the researchers also found that the risk of heartburn was highest in patients who had been prescribed an acid-suppressant drug, such as omeprazole. This increased risk was also found in patients who were prescribed an acid-blocking drug such as omeprazole, an acid blocker that is commonly used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease.
Additionally, they found that patients who took an over-the-counter medication known as Nomeprazole had a significantly lower risk of developing heartburn, as compared with patients who took an oral medication known as Nexium.
"Our analysis demonstrated that patients who took an over-the-counter medicine known as Nomeprazole had a significantly lower risk of developing heartburn," said Dr. David W. Breslau, M. D., of the Cleveland Clinic. "It is important to note that these findings were not observed in a large randomized clinical trial of Nomeprazole or Nexium in patients with heartburn who are not taking medication."
Esomeprazole is also known by the brand name Esomeprazole, which is a prescription-only drug that is prescribed for the treatment of reflux, stomach ulcers, and acid reflux.
The researchers analyzed data on the effectiveness of esomeprazole, the generic name for Prilosec, in patients with heartburn, a common condition that occurs when the heartburn begins, over a period of several days.
The researchers found that patients taking esomeprazole had an increased risk of serious heartburn, compared with patients who took a generic medication known as Nexium. The risk was higher in patients who were prescribed an acid-suppressant drug such as omeprazole. Additionally, patients who took an over-the-counter medication known as Nomeprazole had a significantly lower risk of developing heartburn, as compared with patients who took an oral medication known as Nexium.
"The data shows that patients who took an over-the-counter medication known as Nomeprazole had a significantly lower risk of developing heartburn," said Dr. Breslau, who co-authored the study with her colleagues.
He noted that the research was conducted in the United States and the results are published in the journal "The Lancet".
He added that he is happy to discuss this study with his patients.
"We are proud to say that this is the first study to examine the effectiveness of an over-the-counter medication known as Nexium in the United States and the world. We believe that patients should have access to this medication at all times and that the results of the study will help patients who need it," said Dr. W. J. Carter, M. D., a professor of medicine at the University of New Mexico who also is a consultant to the Cleveland Clinic.
